Intimacy Exhibition 2020

“Intimacy” is the title of Lisette’s latest collection of artworks scheduled for exhibition in the year 2020. The collection consists of both existing works selected for their particularly apt portrayals of intimacy; as well as new works created to express the artist’s understanding of the concept of intimacy. This understanding, both innate and socially constructed, is explored within this collection.

Intimacy manifest itself in an endless variety of intra-personal and interpersonal relationships. Be it the unconditional love a mother has for her child, the companionship between man and his pet, classic romantic love, or the self-love we all hope to both attain and retain. For how can we love others if we know not yet how to love ourselves. Love thyself, and be loved.

Minor Alterations 27 x 38 cm unframed Archival document, ink and acrylic // 31 March 2020

I used a house plan as that is where we are confined to stay at present; needing to re-evaluate, make changes, and adapt to the times we are in. It is a letter of application to the local municipality – just as we now, more than ever, find ourselves strictly controlled by the State as to what is essential and what we can or cannot do.
The close confines of our homes forces us to look deeply at our intimate relationships and establish our allies. We are in this together: we all feel vulnerable and the need for comfort and reassurance like small children.

21 Days. 21 Artists. 21 Impacts.
The story of the South African lockdown, told through the virtual artists of the country.

Land- Exhibition 2019

“South Africa belongs to all who live in it” was the dream, but now land is the ultimate issue and the great divide. Because land defines who, what and where we are. With land we are all monarchs, without it we are serfs. This current art of mine is an expression of the riddle of the land which has to be solved somehow, for all our sakes.”

But what is the true value of land? A walk near Onrus (Unrest) brings me to a totally undeveloped stretch of coast, with a hill for a superb vantage point, an enormous Milkwood forest for a background, and pristine pool for enjoyment. I make a painting of a group of men in intense conversation – The Deal – something is going down. I paint this on a wood grain to represent the surging surf and it presages a burning bus, brick and debris-strewn, angry streets and a neighbourhood agitated by house allocation and land hunger.

Time passes.

In orderly shacks on the dump-top hill-top a new community gasps for life. The pool chokes. Axes and machetes thud dully in the milkwood. The forest recedes. The ‘owner’ refuses compensation.

Riddle me this; whose land is it anyway?
